WHEREAS, It is recognized in Washington state and nationally, 1
that the third Monday of each February honors the accomplishments of 2
two of our most influential presidents, George Washington and Abraham 3
Lincoln, who fought to establish and protect our freedom, and the 4
many other presidents who have upheld our constitutional rights and 5
freedoms; and 6
WHEREAS, The February date was chosen to signify the birthdays of 7
these two presidents, George Washington's on February 22 and Abraham 8
Lincoln's on February 12; and 9
WHEREAS, George Washington, the first president of the United 10
States of America, courageously commanded the troops that won our 11
freedom during the Revolutionary War, which established our country 12
and signified the beginning of an everlasting commitment to freedom 13
and democratic ideals; and 14
WHEREAS, Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States 15
of America, led the Union during the Civil War, delivered the 16
Gettysburg Address, and enacted the Emancipation Proclamation, which 17
ended slavery in the United States; and 18
WHEREAS, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln both fought 19
tirelessly to expand the rights and freedoms of Americans; and20
WHEREAS, We honor the legacies of all the presidents of our 21
country who have exhibited the strength, determination, and 22
leadership in the face of adversity at home and abroad;23
