WHEREAS, John Michael Sattgast was born in Ontario, Oregon, to 1
Herman and Dorothy Sattgast, the youngest child in a blended family 2
with seven older siblings; and 3
WHEREAS, He moved to and grew up in the rural community of New 4
Plymouth, Idaho, where his father was a dairy farmer; and5
WHEREAS, John graduated from New Plymouth High School and 6
attended Boise State University, where he studied communications and 7
public relations and eventually became news director at the student 8
radio station KBSU; and 9
WHEREAS, He continued his radio reporting career at KYET/KWBJ 10
Radio in Ontario, Oregon, KIDO Radio in Boise, Idaho, and KPQ Radio 11
in Wenatchee, Washington, where he met Representative Clyde Ballard; 12
and 13
WHEREAS, John met Debbie Herman from Payette, Idaho, in December 14
1980. Their dates often ended with John rushing to a news story, with 15
Debbie by his side as he went on the air remotely to report. Always 16
the editor, he even sent her love letters back with copy edits. Yet, 17
Debbie still married John in June 1982; and 18
WHEREAS, They went on to have three beautiful children – David, 19
Jason, and Julie. The Sattgast family has called Shelton home since 20
1994; and 21

John was hired as a public information officer for House Republican 23

WHEREAS, In 2011, he became broadcast coordinator for House 3
Republican Caucus Communications. Since then, John has produced more 4
than 4,000 radio stories and coordinated countless interviews with 5
radio stations for House Republican state representatives; and6
WHEREAS, John has served as a public information officer for 63 7
House Republican state representatives, including four House 8
Republican leaders, and served while House Republicans were in the 9
majority, minority, and 49-49 tie; and 10
WHEREAS, He enjoys his extended family of past and present 11
coworkers and state lawmakers, and loves United States history, 12
patriotism, and country, jazz, and rock music; and13
WHEREAS, During his time in the Washington State House of 14
Representatives, John has been active with the National Conference of 15
State Legislatures (NCSL), serving three terms as a board member of 16
the Legislative Information and Communications Staff. In 2023, he 17
received NCSL's Legislative Staff Achievement Award. In 2025, John's 18
service was profiled by the organization in a piece titled: He's Had 19
a 'Front-Row Seat' to Washington State History; and20
WHEREAS, John has not only had a front-row seat to Washington 21
state history, but he has played an important role in sharing those 22
stories with the public for 35 years; 23
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington State House 24
of Representatives honor and celebrate John Michael Sattgast for his 25
dedicated service to the House Republican Caucus and, indeed, to the 26
people of the entire state of Washington. 27
