TO THE WASHINGTON STATE TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION, AND TO THE 1 HONORABLE SECRETARY OF THE WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF 2 TRANSPORTATION, AND TO THE WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF 3 TRANSPORTATION: 4 We, your Memorialists, the Senate and House of Representatives of 5 the State of Washington, in legislative session assembled, 6 respectfully represent and petition as follows: 7 WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a pivotal figure in 8 American history and the Civil Rights Movement, advocating for 9 justice, equality, and nonviolent protest in the face of systemic 10 racism and discrimination; and 11 WHEREAS, Dr. King's leadership and commitment to social justice 12 helped to end segregation, secure voting rights, and promote civil 13 liberties for all citizens, leaving a lasting legacy of equality and 14 human rights; and 15 WHEREAS, The extension of Martin Luther King, Jr. Way is a symbol 16 of the community and unity of the surrounding communities, and is an 17 appropriate way to honor the life and contributions of Dr. King;18 NOW, THEREFORE, Your Memorialists respectfully pray that the 19 Washington State Transportation Commission commence proceedings to 20 extend the naming of Martin Luther King, Jr. Way, as a memorial to 21 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., along state route number 900 from the 22 westerly city limits of Renton to the junction with state route 23 S-0305.1 SENATE JOINT MEMORIAL 8000 State of Washington 69th Legislature 2025 Regular Session By Senators Kauffman, Lovelett, Valdez, Wellman, Liias, Orwall, Hasegawa, Frame, Riccelli, Nobles, Nguyen, Krishnadasan, Stanford, and C.
