WHEREAS, The first creamery in Washington was started in Cheney 1 in 1880; and 2 WHEREAS, Washington's dairy industry is actually older than the 3 state itself; and 4 WHEREAS, Cows were first brought to Washington in 1838; and5 WHEREAS, Dairy farms can be found in twenty-seven of Washington's 6 thirty-nine counties; and 7 WHEREAS, There are thirty-three certified organic dairies in 8 Washington; and 9 WHEREAS, Families across Washington have depended on the safe and 10 nutritious dairy products provided by the dairy farmers of Washington 11 state for generations; and 12 WHEREAS, Dairy is an essential part of a healthy diet, is one of 13 the major food groups represented on the United States Department of 14 Agriculture's "MyPlate" dietary guidelines, and three cups of dairy 15 products per day are recommended for people nine years old and older; 16 and 17 WHEREAS, There are nearly two hundred sixty family dairy farms in 18 Washington state with approximately two hundred fifty-seven thousand 19 dairy cows; and 20 WHEREAS, Dairy ranks as the second highest agricultural commodity 21 produced in Washington, with economic impact valued over one billion 22 dollars; and 23 SENATE RESOLUTION 8609 By Senator Warnick p. 1 8609 WHEREAS, Washington is the tenth largest total milk producer 1 among the fifty United States; and 2 WHEREAS, Dairy Day at the legislature takes place on 3 February 11, 2025, when legislators will visit with Washington 4 dairy producers and enjoy delicious dairy products that are 5 produced in Washington and handed out by the Washington State 6 Dairy Federation, Washington State Dairy Women, and the county 7 Dairy Ambassadors; 8 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington State 9 Senate acknowledge and honor the women and men whose work on 10 dairy farms throughout Washington has contributed much to the 11 strength and vitality of our economy, the character of our 12 communities, and the general well-being of our citizens; and13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be 14 immediately transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to Dairy 15 Farmers of Washington and the Washington State Dairy Federation.16 I, Sarah Bannister, Secretary of the Senate, 17 do hereby certify that this is a true and 18 correct copy of Senate Resolution 8609, 19 adopted by the Senate 20 February 11, 2025 21 SARAH BANNISTER 22 Secretary of the Senate 23 p. 2 8609
