WHEREAS, The students of the Tahoma High School enrolled in the 1
"We the People: The Citizen and Constitution" program consistently 2
showcase superior knowledge of the Constitution of the United States 3
and the lessons instilled by our Founding Fathers; and4
WHEREAS, On Saturday, January 18, 2025, the team from Tahoma High 5
School won the state We the People competition, the school's 16th 6
consecutive state championship, and its 27th state championship in 7
the last 29 years; and 8
WHEREAS, These students will represent Washington state this 9
spring at the 38th annual We the People finals in Washington, D.C., 10
where they aspire to go beyond their outstanding top five finish in 11
the national competition last year; and 12
WHEREAS, The Tahoma High School We the People team is coached by 13
Gretchen Wulfing, the distinguished educator whom was honored in 2011 14
with Washington's Civic Educator of the Year award, and honored again 15
in 2016 as one of Washington's Civic Educators of the Year, adding to 16
the honors of her 18 year academic coaching career, wherein she 17
diligently expands her students' knowledge of the United States 18
Constitution and Bill of Rights, ensuring important principles and 19
foundational ideas are passed on with fervor and intellectual poise 20
to the next generation; and 21
WHEREAS, Studies show that students who participate in the We the 22
People program demonstrate the ideals of democracy and civic 23

engagement, register to vote at a higher rate than their high 1
school counterparts, perform better in examinations on civic 2
knowledge, and lead through community involvement, tolerant 3
political engagement, and respect for the due process of law; 4
and 5
WHEREAS, The Tahoma High School We the People team, led by 6
the inspiring passion of their coach, continues to exemplify 7
excellence in civic education, of which their distinguished 8
record at the national level, placing Top 10 in the Nation for 9 9
out of the past 11 years, is an undeniable testament to their 10
commitment and repeated success; 11
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Senate honor Nathan 12
Andualem, Vritika Bhuva, Alicia Cantu, Lucas Chabaud, John 13
Chamberlain, Requin Drier, Reid Gardner, Shravya Gupta, Sirin 14
Khan, Ryan Kim, Samuel Lindell, Timothy McNey, Carly Menchaca, 15
Esmeralda Murillo-Reyes, Diya Nampy, Oakley Palmer, Ruby Santos, 16
Pranaav Sund, Elena Warner, Nathan Wengreen, Yeabesira 17
Wesenyeleh, Gunnar Wheaton, Macy Whitt, Allison Zappe, and 18
Sumaiyya Zunairah as "Warriors of the Constitution"; and19
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be 20
immediately transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to the 21
members of Tahoma High School's We the People team, team advisor 22
Gretchen Wulfing, and Tahoma High School Principal Judy Beliveau 23
to convey the respect of this body for excellence in civic 24
education. 25
