WHEREAS, The University of Washington Board of Regents selected 1
Ana Mari Cauce as the UW's 33rd President on October 13, 2015, after 2
serving as Interim President for several months, beginning a 3
groundbreaking presidency in the University's history; and4
WHEREAS, Cauce previously held the position of provost and 5
executive vice president; served as Dean of the College of Arts and 6
Sciences, Chair of American Ethnic Studies, Chair of Psychology, and 7
Director of the UW honors program; and has been a member of the UW 8
faculty since 1986; and 9
WHEREAS, For nearly 40 years, Cauce has championed access to 10
higher education, including through the Husky Promise which provides 11
full tuition to eligible Washington students who otherwise could not 12
attend college; and 13
WHEREAS, Raised in Miami, Florida, after emigrating with her 14
family from Cuba, Cauce earned a B.A. in English and psychology from 15
the University of Miami and a Ph.D. in psychology, with a 16
concentration in child clinical and community psychology, from Yale 17
University; and 18
WHEREAS, For her teaching, scholarship, and advocacy, Cauce has 19
received numerous awards, including the Dalmas Taylor Distinguished 20
Contribution Award, the Luis Fernando Esteban Public Service Award, 21
the James M. Jones Lifetime Achievement Award of the American 22
Psychological Association, the Grace Hopper Exemplary Leadership 23

Award, and the Distinguished Contribution Award from the Society 1
for Community Research and Action; and 2
WHEREAS, In 1999, Cauce was awarded the Distinguished 3
Teaching Award, the highest honor the University of Washington 4
gives to faculty members for their work with students in and 5
outside the classroom; in 2020, she was elected to the American 6
Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 2022, she was elected to 7
the National Academy of Medicine in recognition of her 8
leadership in health education, research, and service systems, 9
as well as her own pioneering research in behavioral health; and10
WHEREAS, Cauce is a highly accomplished researcher whose 11
work focuses on adolescent development, with a special emphasis 12
on at-risk youth; she is also a strong advocate for women and 13
underrepresented minorities to pursue careers in science, 14
technology, engineering, and mathematics. Her legacy includes 15
many accomplished individuals who benefited from her teaching 16
and mentoring; and 17
WHEREAS, Cauce fostered positive and collaborative 18
relationships with higher education leaders across public four 19
year, community, and technical colleges, and independent 20
colleges; and 21
WHEREAS, Cauce served as a mentor to countless University of 22
Washington students, faculty, and staff members and fostered 23
those relationships regardless of her role at the University; 24
and 25
WHEREAS, Cauce leads the University of Washington by 26
advancing its mission in four key areas: Providing a 27
transformative student experience, producing cutting-edge 28
research and scholarship that has a global impact, upholding the 29
UW's dedication to its public mission through public service and 30
community engagement, and infusing the entire university with a 31
commitment to innovation; 32
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State 33
of Washington commend and honor Ana Mari Cauce in her final year 34
as President and for her service to the citizens of the State of 35
Washington; and 36
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be transmitted 37
by the Secretary of the Senate to University of Washington 38
