WHEREAS, Sikh Americans have made invaluable contributions to the 1
cultural, economic, and social fabric of our state; and2
WHEREAS, Sikhs have a long and rich history in Washington state, 3
with communities that have been integral to the development and 4
prosperity of our region for over a century; and 5
WHEREAS, The principles of Sikhism, including equality, justice, 6
and service to humanity, align closely with the values upon which our 7
state and nation were founded; and 8
WHEREAS, Despite their significant contributions and unwavering 9
commitment to our communities, Sikhs have often faced discrimination, 10
harassment, and violence due to ignorance and prejudice; and11
WHEREAS, One of the darkest chapters in this history occurred on 12
September 4, 1907, when a mob in Bellingham targeted Sikh laborers, 13
resulting in the infamous Bellingham Riots; and 14
WHEREAS, During these riots, Sikh workers were violently 15
attacked, their homes and businesses vandalized, and many were 16
forcibly expelled from the city, with some even facing death threats 17
and physical harm; and 18
WHEREAS, The Bellingham Riots serve as a stark reminder of the 19
dangers of xenophobia, racism, and bigotry, and highlight the 20
importance of standing united against hate in all its forms; and21
WHEREAS, It is essential that we remember and reflect upon this 22
tragic event in our history to ensure that such injustices are never 23

repeated and to reaffirm our commitment to building a more 1
inclusive and equitable society for all; 2
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Senate of the state 3
of Washington honor and celebrate the contributions of Sikhs in 4
Washington state and recognize their significant role in shaping 5
our state's history and identity; and 6
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate of the state of 7
Washington reaffirm its commitment to combatting discrimination, 8
hatred, and violence against Sikhs and all marginalized 9
communities, and to promoting diversity, inclusion, and 10
understanding throughout our state. 11
