WHEREAS, January 27th is observed annually as International 1
Holocaust Remembrance Day to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust 2
and to ensure that future generations understand the importance of 3
preventing hatred, prejudice, and discrimination; and4
WHEREAS, January 27, 2026, marks the 81st anniversary of the 5
liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, where more than 1.1 6
million men, women, and children were brutally murdered by the Nazi 7
regime during the Holocaust; and 8
WHEREAS, The Holocaust, also known as the Shoah, was the 9
systematic state-sponsored persecution and murder of approximately 10
six million Jews by Nazi Germany and its collaborators during World 11
War II, and millions of others, including Roma, Poles, disabled 12
individuals, LGBTQ individuals, Soviet prisoners of war, and 13
political dissidents, were also targeted; and 14
WHEREAS, The memory of the Holocaust serves as a stark reminder 15
of the devastating consequences of intolerance, bigotry, and hatred, 16
and underscores the importance of promoting respect for human rights, 17
equality, and the dignity of all people; and 18
WHEREAS, Antisemitism, including harassment on the basis of 19
actual or perceived Jewish origin, ancestry, ethnicity, identity, 20
affiliation, or faith, remains a disturbingly persistent, pervasive 21
and growing problem; and 22

WHEREAS, According to the Anti-Defamation League, 1
antisemitic incidents in Washington state have risen 268 percent 2
since 2023; and 3
WHEREAS, The Washington state Senate reflects on the lessons 4
of the Holocaust and continues to work together to build a 5
future that values the humanity of each individual, free of 6
antisemitism, hatred, and bigotry; and 7
WHEREAS, Survivors of the Holocaust, their families, and 8
communities, as well as the organizations dedicated to 9
preserving Holocaust history, serve as living testaments to the 10
resilience of the human spirit and the importance of ensuring 11
that such atrocities are never repeated; and 12
WHEREAS, This day calls for the education of future 13
generations about the history and impact of the Holocaust, the 14
importance of combating antisemitism, intolerance, and all forms 15
of hate to ensure that never again means never again;16
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington state 17
Senate remember January 27th as International Holocaust 18
Remembrance Day in the state of Washington, a day of reflection 19
and remembrance for the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. 20
The citizens of Washington are encouraged to participate in 21
activities and educational programs that foster a deeper 22
understanding of the Holocaust, its historical context, and the 23
ongoing fight against hatred, discrimination, and antisemitism; 24
and 25
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Washington state Senate 26
acknowledge survivors of the Holocaust and honor the legacy of 27
those who perished in the Holocaust by ensuring that their 28
memory endures for generations to come. 29
