WHEREAS, January 26, 2026, marked the 77th Republic Day in India, 1
commemorating the effective adoption of the Constitution of the 2
world's largest democracy; and 3
WHEREAS, India solidified their achievement of independence from 4
British rule through peaceful and nonviolent resistance; and5
WHEREAS, India's Constitution requires equality under the law, 6
asserts equality before law, and declares that "the State shall not 7
deny to any person equality before the law or the equal protection of 8
the laws within the territory of India"; and 9
WHEREAS, India has a strong tradition of maintaining democratic 10
ideals through robust checks on those in power; and11
WHEREAS, Washington state has many cultural and economic ties to 12
India, including more than 100,000 Indian Americans living in the 13
state; and 14
WHEREAS, The newly established Consulate General of India in 15
Seattle works to strengthen the comprehensive global strategic 16
partnership between India and the State of Washington sharing 17
priorities, including agriculture, trade and economic cooperation, 18
science and technology, critical and emerging technologies, health 19
care, educational and cultural exchanges, and people-to-people ties; 20
and 21

WHEREAS, Indian Americans are small business owners, 1
entrepreneurs, and CEOs of Washington companies, including the 2
founding officers of many Seattle-based tech companies; and3
WHEREAS, These businesses provide valuable services, 4
resources, and jobs to the people of this state; and5
WHEREAS, Indian Americans have been emigrating to the West 6
Coast since the 19th century, working in our most vital 7
industries including agriculture, logging, and trade; and8
WHEREAS, Indian Americans reflect the values of inclusion 9
and pluralism through their many cultural and religious 10
identities, including Muslim, Sikh, and Hindu; and11
WHEREAS, Indian Americans serve selflessly in our armed 12
forces and in law enforcement, and contribute profoundly to the 13
health care industry and Washington's institutions of higher 14
education; 15
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the 16
2026 Republic Day of India as a symbol of the shared values of 17
democracy, diversity, and inclusion, between the nation of India 18
and both the State of Washington and the United States of 19
America. 20
