WHEREAS, The first creamery in Washington was started in Cheney 1
in 1880; and 2
WHEREAS, Washington's dairy industry is actually older than the 3
state itself; and 4
WHEREAS, Cows were first brought to Washington in 1838; and5
WHEREAS, Dairy farms can be found in 27 of Washington's 39 6
counties; and 7
WHEREAS, There are 33 certified organic dairies in Washington; 8
and 9
WHEREAS, Families across Washington have depended on the safe and 10
nutritious dairy products provided by the dairy farmers of Washington 11
state for generations; and 12
WHEREAS, Dairy is an essential part of a healthy diet and three 13
cups of dairy products per day are recommended for people nine years 14
old and older by the United States department of agriculture (USDA) 15
and the United States department of health and human services; and16
WHEREAS, There are nearly 260 family dairy farms in Washington 17
state with approximately 257,000 dairy cows; and 18
WHEREAS, Dairy ranks as the third highest agricultural commodity 19
produced in Washington, with an economic impact valued over one 20
billion dollars; and 21
WHEREAS, Washington is the 10th largest total milk producer among 22
the 50 United States; and 23

WHEREAS, Dairy day at the legislature takes place on 1
February 18, 2026, when legislators will visit with Washington 2
dairy producers and enjoy delicious dairy products that are 3
produced in Washington and handed out by the Washington State 4
Dairy Federation, the Washington State Dairy Women, and the 5
county Dairy Ambassadors; 6
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Senate acknowledge 7
and honor the women and men whose work on dairy farms throughout 8
Washington has contributed much to the strength and vitality of 9
our economy, the character of our communities, and the general 10
well-being of our citizens; and 11
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be 12
immediately transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to Dairy 13
Farmers of Washington and the Washington State Dairy Federation.14
