WHEREAS, March is recognized as Developmental Disabilities 1
Awareness Month under the leadership of the National Association of 2
Councils on Developmental Disabilities. It is a time to recognize 3
people with developmental disabilities and the ways they strengthen 4
families, communities, and public life across Washington state; and5
WHEREAS, Developmental disabilities are lifelong conditions that 6
may affect learning, communication, mobility, or independent living, 7
and every person deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and 8
care; and 9
WHEREAS, Estimates using federal definitions suggest that 10
approximately 1.58 percent of Washington's population meets the 11
criteria for intellectual and developmental disabilities, which 12
translates to an estimated 120,000 people statewide, each with their 13
own talents, goals, and contributions; and 14
WHEREAS, People with developmental disabilities are students, 15
coworkers, neighbors, friends, and loved ones, and their lives 16
reflect the importance of belonging, stability, and community 17
support; and 18
WHEREAS, Across Washington, families and caregivers work every 19
day alongside educators, health care professionals, service 20
providers, and advocates to ensure individuals with developmental 21
disabilities are supported at every stage of life, from early 22

is strengthened when people with developmental disabilities are 4

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington state 7
Senate acknowledge March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness 8
Month, honor individuals with developmental disabilities across 9
Washington state, and express appreciation for the families, 10
caregivers, educators, providers, and advocates whose care and 11
support help make our communities more inclusive, more 12
connected, and stronger for everyone. 13
