WHEREAS, The ancestral homeland of the Chinook Tribal Nation lies 1
along the lower Columbia river and Pacific coast of southwest 2
Washington state, and the area remains a center of culture and 3
community for tribal members; and 4
WHEREAS, The traditional Chinook territories throughout southwest 5
Washington encompass lands and waterways crucial to the history and 6
development of the Pacific Northwest, and which remain central to our 7
identity as a state today; and 8
WHEREAS, The Chinook tribes controlled trading networks and the 9
transportation corridor at the mouth of the Columbia during the 10
period of European exploration. They engaged in peaceful trade with 11
visiting sailing vessels, and provided assistance that proved crucial 12
to the survival of Merriwether Lewis, William Clark, and their party 13
as they wintered near Astoria in 1805 and 1806; and14
WHEREAS, The Chinook people have been a force for peace in the 15
region, gaining influence through diplomacy and relationship building 16
rather than through conflict, violence, and conquest; and17
WHEREAS, The civic life of the Chinook Tribal Nation has been 18
guided by principles that include alliance building, cooperation, and 19
cultural exchange; and 20
WHEREAS, The Chinook Tribal Nation continues to live by its core 21
values of peace, respect and collaboration, strengthening our 22

communities, informing our governance, and making meaningful 1
contributions to our society as a whole; and 2
WHEREAS, The Chinook Tribal Nation is a valued component of 3
the southwest Washington community, strengthening the social 4
fabric and well-being of the region through its presence; and5
WHEREAS, The enduring presence of the Chinook Tribal Nation 6
demonstrates its resilience, strength, and purpose;7
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington state 8
Senate recognize the importance of the Chinook Tribal Nation in 9
the development of our region, and its present day contribution 10
to the civic, cultural, and economic life of the state of 11
Washington. 12
