WHEREAS, Washington state is committed to the promotion of safety 1
programs, policies, and actions; and 2
WHEREAS, Thousands of motorcyclists travel the roads, streets, 3
highways, and interstate systems of Washington state every day; and4
WHEREAS, Motorcycles are fuel efficient vehicles that have access 5
to Washington state high occupancy vehicle lanes, promoting a less 6
congested travel way; and 7
WHEREAS, Motorcyclists help to provide funds for the 8
transportation infrastructure of Washington state that they and 9
others use; and 10
WHEREAS, The majority of the motorcycling community is committed 11
to motorcycle safety and awareness and promotes policies and 12
procedures for themselves and other motorists in order to create a 13
safe roadway for all; and 14
WHEREAS, Motorcyclists make up just about three percent of all 15
registered vehicles but account for about fifteen percent of all 16
traffic fatalities as of 2017; and 17
WHEREAS, The United States Department of Transportation's 18
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched a Get Up to 19
Speed on Motorcycles campaign to help motorists learn how to drive 20
safely around motorcycles in order to keep all roadway users safe; 21
and 22

WHEREAS, The motorcycling community is filled with people 1
dedicated to charitable organizations and activities; and2
WHEREAS, Hundreds of motorcyclists, like those of Bikers 3
Against Child Abuse and American Legion Riders, band together to 4
support kids, veterans, and other vulnerable communities all 5
around the state; and 6
WHEREAS, The month of May is recognized nationally and 7
throughout the state as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month;8
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington State 9
Senate celebrate the month of May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness 10
Month; and 11
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be 12
immediately transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to the 13
AAA Washington office, the ABATE of Washington office, Bikers 14
Against Child Abuse, the representative of the Washington Road 15
Riders Association, the headquarters of the Washington State 16
Patrol, and the Washington State Department of Transportation.17
