WHEREAS, Steven Edward Conway was first elected to the Washington 1
State House of Representatives in 1993, and was reelected eight 2
times. He was elected to the Washington State Senate in 2010, and was 3
reelected three times; and 4
WHEREAS, For 34 years, Senator Conway has represented the 29th 5
legislative district, which includes the cities of Tacoma, Midland, 6
Parkland, and Spanaway, and is home to many working families; and7
WHEREAS, Senator Conway has served on labor committees in the 8
House or Senate for the entire duration of his legislative career, 9
and served as Chair of the committee for many years in the House; and10
WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure, Senator Conway has been a 11
steadfast advocate for working families and a leading champion of 12
collective bargaining rights, recognizing the fundamental importance 13
of workers' ability to organize and negotiate for fair wages, 14
benefits, and working conditions; and 15
WHEREAS, Senator Conway's influence and input can be found in 16
every major labor policy over the last three decades. He has shaped 17
and strengthened collective bargaining rights, unemployment 18
insurance, apprenticeship programs, Paid Family and Medical Leave, 19
and our state's pension system; and 20
WHEREAS, Senator Conway has also been intimately involved in the 21
state's pension policy. He is the longest serving member of the 22

Select Committee on Pension Policy, a committee that has made 1
Washington's pension system one of the best funded in the 2
nation; and 3
WHEREAS, Senator Conway has also delivered funding for 4
countless local projects during his career. His work helped 5
expand the University of Washington Tacoma and build the LeMay 6
Car Museum, as well as establish the Harry Bridges Center for 7
Labor Studies at the University of Washington and, most 8
recently, the Asia Pacific Cultural Center in Tacoma; and9
WHEREAS, Senator Conway is also passionate about supporting 10
park spaces, and was instrumental in securing funding for the 11
Star Center in South Tacoma, the Eastside Community Center in 12
the Eastside neighborhood, and Cross Park in the Frederickson 13
area; and 14
WHEREAS, Senator Conway was elected by the Senate to the 15
position of President Pro Tempore on January 13, 2025, and 16
presided over the Senate with grace when called upon to do so; 17
and 18
WHEREAS, The Washington State Legislature will look back at 19
Senator Conway's career as an example of a life dedicated to 20
public service and the advancement of worker protections and 21
rights; 22
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Senate of the state 23
of Washington commend and honor Steve Conway for his 24
extraordinary service to the people of the 29th Legislative 25
District and the State of Washington; and 26
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be transmitted 27
by the Secretary of the Senate to Senator Steve Conway with the 28
Senate's most sincere thanks and appreciation for his years of 29
exemplary service in the Legislature. 30
