An Act
to amend
5.25 (3) (c) of the statutes;
relating to:
notice of change in

polling place location.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Current law requires municipalities to establish polling places for each election at least 30 days before the election. Under current law, after an election and more than 30 days before the next election, the location of a polling place in a municipality may not be discontinued without the approval of the municipality’s governing body after a public hearing at which the public has an opportunity to present testimony on the proposed discontinuation.
Under this bill, if the location of a polling place is discontinued after an election, notice of that change must be mailed to each residence the polling place serves no later than 30 days before the next election.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do enact as follows:

(c) After an election and more than 30 days before the next election,

the location of a polling place in a municipality may not be discontinued without the

approval of the municipality’s governing body after a public hearing at which the

public has an opportunity to present testimony on the proposed discontinuation.
If

the location of a polling place is discontinued after an election, the municipal clerk
6
or board of election commissioners shall, no later than 30 days before the next
7
election, provide notice of that change by mail to each residence in the area served
8
by the polling place.
