AJR103,1,2
1
Relating to:
proclaiming the last full week of September as Frontotemporal
2
Dementia Awareness Week.
AJR103,1,6
3
Whereas, Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) is a form of dementia caused by
4
progressive nerve cell loss in the brain's frontal and temporal lobes, which variably
5
causes deterioration in behavior, personality, or difficulty with producing or
6
comprehending language; and
AJR103,1,10
7
Whereas, according to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, FTD
8
is frequently misdiagnosed as Alzheimer’s diseases, depression, Parkinson’s
9
disease, or a psychiatric condition; on average, it currently takes 3.6 years to get an
10
accurate diagnosis; and
AJR103,1,12
11
Whereas, most FTD cases occur between the ages of 45 and 64; therefore, FTD
12
could have a substantially greater effect on work, family, and finances; and
AJR103,1,14
13
Whereas, the economic burden of FTD is estimated to be $120,000 per year per
14
family; and
AJR103,2,2
1
Whereas, FTD may affect a person's ability to express emotions and to show
2
affection and empathy; and
AJR103,2,5
3
Whereas, in the behavioral variant of FTD, a person’s personality may be
4
significantly changed and this could manifest as impaired judgment and
5
responding to social situations in a way that may be considered inappropriate; and
AJR103,2,9
6
Whereas, in one of the language variants of FTD—primary progressive
7
aphasia—a person may have difficulty producing speech and understanding
8
grammar, may lose the meaning of words or become hesitant in their speech, and
9
may eventually become nonverbal; and
AJR103,2,11
10
Whereas, today, there is no cure for FTD, and there are no current treatments
11
available to slow or stop the progression of the disease; and
AJR103,2,14
12
Whereas, the last week of September has been declared World Frontotemporal
13
Dementia Awareness Week to raise funds to improve care and support options and
14
support research for treatments and ultimately a cure; now, therefore, be it
AJR103,2,17
15
Resolved by the
assembly
, the
senate
concurring, That
the Wisconsin
16
Legislature designates the last full week of September as Frontotemporal
17
Dementia Awareness Week in Wisconsin.
