honoring the 200th anniversary of Norwegian immigration to the

United States.

Whereas, the sloop
Restauration
departed Stavanger, Norway, on July 4, 1825,
4
carrying dozens of passengers across the Atlantic Ocean despite its small size; and

Whereas, much like those who journeyed on the famed
Mayflower
over two
6
centuries prior, the passengers aboard the
Restauration
sought religious freedom in
7
the United States; and

Whereas, the
Restauration
arrived in New York Harbor on October 9, 1825, to
9
much sensation among the local press, with one newspaper headline describing the
10
arrival of the
Restauration
as “a novel sight”; and

Whereas, between 1825 and 1925, more than 800,000 Norwegians followed the
12
“sloopers” of the
Restauration
by emigrating to the United States in pursuit of
13
opportunity; and

Whereas, Wisconsin became home to many of these immigrants, with about 25
2
percent of all Norwegian Americans living in Wisconsin by 1900; and

Whereas, Norwegian Wisconsinites have uniquely shaped our state’s proud

history and culture; and

Whereas, to celebrate the bicentennial of
Restauration’s
voyage, a replica ship
6
of the same name embarked from Stavanger on July 4, 2025, to make the same
7
journey to New York; and

Whereas, this journey honors the first organized Norwegian emigration to the
9
United States, as well as the cultural and historical ties between Norway and the
10
United States; now, therefore, be it

State Legislature honors the year 2025 as the 200th anniversary of Norwegian
