paying tribute to the entire Polish community that has lived in

Wisconsin for 180 years and contributed to its strength.

Whereas, the United States proclaimed its Declaration of Independence 250
4
years ago; and

Whereas, shared Polish-American heroes, such as Tadeusz Kościuszko,
6
Kazimierz Pułaski, Włodzimierz Krzyżanowski, Aleksander Bielawski, Ignacy Jan
7
Paderewski, Jan Karski, Izydor Modelski, and Ryszard Kukliński demonstrate how
8
Poland and the United States cherish freedom; and

Whereas, the proud Polish nation, founded in 966, was wiped off the map of
10
Europe in 1795 for 123 years; and

Whereas, 180 years ago, the first Poles arrived in Wisconsin, yearning for the
12
freedom that had been taken from them by occupying powers who had partitioned
13
the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth; and

Whereas, these Poles, who loved freedom and justice despite the cruelty of the
1
occupying powers, always carried love for their homeland as well as liberty in their
2
hearts; and

Whereas, the pursuit of freedom compelled these Poles to leave their native
4
land and seek a new home; and

Whereas, many proud Poles came to the welcoming land of Wisconsin, where
6
they set down roots and enriched the culture of this place that so reminded them of
7
the Land of the White Eagle; and

Whereas, many Polish heroes who fought for Poland's independence in the
9
January Uprising and were forced to flee for their lives after its collapse are buried
10
in the welcoming land of Wisconsin; and

Whereas, Wisconsin became a refuge for one of the participants of Poland’s
12
famous Września Children's Strike. Tekla Tomaszewska-Dembińska was one of the
13
young students who resisted the ban on learning religion and praying in her native
14
Polish tongue. For defying this order, she and other classmates were harshly
15
persecuted and brutally beaten; now, therefore, be it

State Legislature pays tribute to the entire Polish community that has lived in
