Whereas, February is recognized across the nation as Teen Dating Violence

Awareness and Prevention Month; and

Whereas, dating violence is a reality for many young people and an issue that
6
many parents are unaware of; and

Whereas, one in five teens is a victim of physical, emotional, or verbal abuse
8
from a dating partner, and two in three teens who were in an abusive relationship
9
never told anyone about the abuse; and

Whereas, more than half of women and men who have been physically or
11
sexually abused or stalked by a dating partner first experience dating violence
12
between the ages of 11 and 24; and

Whereas, young people can choose better relationships when they understand

that healthy relationships are based on respect and when they learn to identify
2
early warning signs of an abusive relationship; and

Whereas, the elimination of dating violence can be achieved only through the

cooperation of individuals, organizations, and communities; and

Whereas, Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month provides an

excellent opportunity for the public to learn more about preventing dating violence

and to show support for the numerous organizations and individuals who provide

critical advocacy, services, and assistance to victims; now, therefore, be it
