Whereas, the story of Hispanics and Latinos is the story of America; and

Whereas, Hispanics and Latinos contribute to the economy, arts, sciences,
5
sports, and culture in the United States; and

Whereas, Latinos serve in government at every level, from school boards to the
7
state house, from city councils and mayoral offices to the U.S. Congress; and

Whereas, Latinos have served with honor and distinction in every conflict
9
involving the United States since the Revolutionary War; and

Whereas, the 2020 U.S. Census revealed that the Hispanic population had
11
surpassed 62 million people, constituting nearly 19 percent of the total population
12
of the United States; and

Whereas, about 450,000 Latinos call Wisconsin home; and

Whereas, this figure includes JoCasta Zamarripa, who became the first

Latina elected to the Wisconsin Legislature in November 2010 and later became a
2
member of the Milwaukee Common Council; and

Whereas, this figure also includes Judge Pedro Colón, who was the first Latino
4
elected to the Wisconsin Legislature in November 1998 and was sworn in as the
5
state’s first Latino appellate court judge in November 2023; now, therefore, be it

concurring, That
the members of

the Wisconsin Legislature honor the achievements of Hispanics and Latinos in
8
America and honor the many ways they continue to enrich our nation and shape our
9
common future; and, be it further

the Wisconsin Legislature proclaims September 15 to
11
October 15, 2025, as Hispanic Heritage Month in Wisconsin.
