Whereas, the United States was founded by those willing to endure enormous
4
sacrifice so that individual and collective freedoms may be secured; and

Whereas, Wisconsin was and is home to countless veterans of the armed forces
6
who performed above and beyond the call of duty; and

Whereas, throughout the years, service members have been called upon to
8
take up arms against the enemies of the United States, and to risk their lives and
9
leave behind their loved ones, for the purpose of honorably safeguarding the
10
freedoms and liberties guaranteed to the nation's citizens; and

Whereas, over eight million such citizens bravely served in the Vietnam War,
12
during a time when the herbicide known as “Agent 13 Orange” was widely used in
13
Vietnam as part of the United States' Operation Ranch Hand, from 1961 to 1971;
14
and

Whereas, nearly 20 million gallons of this orange powder were sprayed over
2
the land from helicopters or low-flying aircraft, exposing roughly 2.6 million United
3
States service members to the herbicide and defoliant chemical; and

Whereas, Agent Orange is a dioxin and carcinogenic chemical that enters the
5
body through physical contact or ingestion and moves into the human cell nucleus,
6
where it attacks the genes and causes a number of serious illnesses, including
7
leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, heart disease, soft tissue sarcoma, amyloidosis,
8
diabetes, and various types of cancers; and

Whereas, Agent Orange also causes genetic damage and, in some cases, the
10
children and grandchildren of veterans exposed to Agent Orange have been born
11
with spina bifida and other health issues; and

Whereas, while the names of fallen service members are listed upon the
13
Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., those veterans who fall victim to
14
the effects of Agent Orange are not recognized as fatalities of the Vietnam War; now,
15
therefore, be it

assembly

concurring, That
the Wisconsin
17
Legislature formally recognizes both August and October 2025 as Agent Orange
18
Awareness Months in Wisconsin in order to raise public awareness about Agent
19
Orange and its impact on service members and their families.
