Whereas, SS
Edmund Fitzgerald
, a bulk cargo vessel built by Great Lakes
4
Engineering Works, was launched on June 8, 1958, in River Rouge, Michigan; and

Whereas, the
Edmund Fitzgerald
measured in at 729 feet and 13,632 gross
6
tons, making it the largest ship on the Great Lakes for the following 13 years; and

Whereas, the ship’s crew unknowingly started their final voyage on November
8
9, 1975, departing from Superior, Wisconsin; and

Whereas, the freighter was headed to Zug Island, Michigan, carrying just over
10
26,000 tons of iron ore; and

Whereas, the weather intensified in the region, causing a violent storm on
12
Lake Superior with gale-force winds and heavy seas; and

Whereas, on November 10, 1975, Captain Ernest McSorley of the
Edmund

Fitzgerald
reported problems with his ship, including a loss of radar functionality,
2
topside damage, and a starboard list; and

Whereas, shortly after 7 p.m., Captain McSorley made his last transmission to
4
a nearby vessel, stating that they were holding their own before disappearing from
5
radar detection; and

and SS
William Clay Ford
left the refuge of

Whitefish Bay late that evening in a heroic effort to search for possible survivors of
8
the missing ship; and

Whereas, the
Edmund Fitzgerald
was found on the bottom of Lake Superior
10
the next week, 17 miles short of Whitefish Point, taking with it the lives of all 29
11
men onboard; and

Whereas, eight of these men were Wisconsin residents, with seven calling the
13
south shore of Lake Superior their home and the other living near Lake Michigan;
14
and

Whereas, despite the dangers, thousands of men and women continue to serve
16
in the Great Lakes maritime industry with quiet bravery; now, therefore, be it

assembly

senate
concurring, That
the members of

the Wisconsin Legislature solemnly recognize November 10, 2025, as the 50th
19
anniversary of the tragic loss of the crew of SS
Edmund Fitzgerald
and acknowledge

the family members and friends who continue to be affected by the absence of their
21
loved ones.
