Whereas, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, collectively known as Eid, are the two

major Islamic holidays; and

Whereas, Eid translates to “holiday” or “festival” in Arabic; and

Whereas, Islam is one of the world’s major religions; and

Whereas, the first day of the 10th month of the Islamic calendar is globally

recognized as Eid al-Fitr; and

Whereas, Eid al-Fitr celebrates the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan,

during which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, practice spiritual reflection, exercise

self-discipline, and gather in community; and

Whereas, the 10th day of the 12th month of the Islamic calendar is globally

recognized as Eid al-Adha; and

Whereas, Eid al-Adha marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah, when

Muslims commemorate Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son to show devotion

to God, as referenced in the Quran, the Old Testament, and the New Testament;

Whereas, these holidays shift with the Islamic lunar calendar by

approximately 10 to 11 days each year in accordance with visual sightings of the

new crescent moon; and

Whereas, the majority of Wisconsin’s 70,000 Muslims celebrate these two

major holidays every year by attending community prayer, enjoying rich and festive

meals, and spending time with friends and family; and

Whereas, all Wisconsinites can take meaningful actions to recognize Eid in

support of the diverse Muslim community in our state; and

Whereas, state recognition of Eid will highlight the holiday to schools and

employers to underscore Eid’s religious and cultural importance to Muslims across

the state, potentially enabling Muslim students and employees to fully observe
14
their two major holidays; and

Whereas, Eid provides an occasion to foster a more welcoming and inclusive
16
state by uplifting the Wisconsin Muslim community; now, therefore, be it
