SJR135,1,3
1
Relating to:
Commemorating the 250th anniversary of one of the first major
2
victories for the Patriots in the Revolutionary War and recognizing the
3
contributions of Irish Americans in the struggle for independence.
SJR135,1,6
4
Whereas, on Saint Patrick’s Day in 1776, the British ended the 11-month siege
5
of Boston when they withdrew from the city, leaving it in the control of American
6
forces, including General John Sullivan, the son of Irish immigrants; and
SJR135,1,9
7
Whereas, General John Sullivan, who was named “Officer of the Day” by
8
George Washington, went on to be the governor of New Hampshire, and his brother
9
James later served as the governor of Massachusetts; and
SJR135,1,14
10
Whereas, we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of
11
Independence and the eight Irish American signatories thereof, three of whom were
12
born in Ireland: Thomas McKean, who went on to serve as president of the
13
Continental Congress; Charles Carroll; James Smith; George Taylor; Matthew
14
Thornton; Edward Rutledge; Thomas Lynch Jr.; and George Read; and
SJR135,2,3
1
Whereas, these eight men came from different communities and had varied
2
upbringings as the sons of lawyers, clergymen, farmers, and indentured laborers,
3
yet they stood united in their efforts to create a republic in the United States; and
SJR135,2,7
4
Whereas, the spirit of independence, Enlightenment-era republican ideas,
5
and Irish defiance of these eight men are at the heart of the American and Irish
6
republics they crucially helped found, with their work inspiring generations in
7
Ireland to seek and ultimately secure an Irish republic; and
SJR135,2,11
8
Whereas, the first 200 copies of the Declaration of Independence were printed
9
by John Dunlap, who emigrated to the United States from County Tyrone in
10
Northern Ireland, and its first international appearance was in Ireland’s
Belfast
11
Newsletter
; and
SJR135,2,14
12
Whereas, 250 years ago, Stephen Moylan, George Washington’s Irish
13
American aide-de-camp, was the first to commit the phrase “United States of
14
America” to paper; and
SJR135,2,19
15
Whereas, in 1784, Lord Mountjoy reported to the British Parliament that
16
“America was lost by Irish emigrants . . . I am assured from the best authority, the
17
major part of the American Army was composed of Irish and that the Irish language
18
was as commonly spoken in the American ranks as English. I am also informed it
19
was their valor that determined the contest;” now, therefore, be it
