Whereas, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, eminent American civil rights activist,
3
politician, and ordained Baptist minister, passed away peacefully at his Chicago
4
home on February 17, 2026, at the age of 84; and

Whereas, Jesse Jackson articulated a clear vision of racial equity and pursued
6
social and economic justice for a broad coalition of underserved Americans; and

Whereas, Jesse Jackson was born in 1941 in Greenville, South Carolina,
8
where he inherited deep values of generosity and perseverance from his mother,
9
Helen Burns Jackson; and

Whereas, Jesse Jackson met Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1965 in
11
Selma, Alabama, and soon devoted himself to supporting the Southern Christian
12
Leadership Conference and the greater civil rights movement; and

Whereas, in 1971, Jesse Jackson founded Operation PUSH, an organization
1
that promoted the economic advancement of Black Americans by organizing
2
boycotts and lobbying corporations to adopt affirmative action policies; and

Whereas, Jesse Jackson entered the political arena in the 1980s, becoming the
4
first Black American to emerge as a serious contender for a major party
5
presidential nomination; and

Whereas, Jesse Jackson centered his political movement around a “rainbow

coalition” of disadvantaged Americans often overlooked by traditional politics,
8
including racial and ethnic minorities, small farmers, people with disabilities, and
9
the working poor; and

Whereas, Jesse Jackson founded the National Rainbow Coalition in 1984; and

Whereas, Jesse Jackson eventually attained elected office, serving as

Washington, D.C.’s shadow senator from 1991 to 1997; and

Whereas, Jesse Jackson was widely known for his distinctively passionate
14
speeches, including his “Keep Hope Alive” speech at the 1988 Democratic National
15
Convention, which inspired millions across the country to “unite for the greater
16
good”; and

Whereas, Jesse Jackson negotiated the release of American hostages and met
18
with world leaders to build peace and promote democratic ideals on the global stage;

Whereas, Jesse Jackson made countless visits to Wisconsin, including to lead

the state assembly in prayer in 2011; and

Whereas, Jesse Jackson spent his later years supporting fair housing
23
initiatives and voting rights and providing scholarships to students pursuing
24
higher education at historically Black colleges and universities; and

weaves us together reminds us that we must join together in the pursuit of a better,

more just future; now, therefore, be it

concurring, That
the Wisconsin

Legislature honors the extraordinary life and public service of Rev. Jesse L.

Jackson and recognizes his profound contributions to the American civil rights
7
movement and his commitment to freedom and justice; and, be it further

the Wisconsin Legislature mourns Rev. Jesse L. Jackson’s
9
passing and extends condolences to his community, friends, and family.
