Whereas, thousands of Hispanic Americans have served in the U.S. Armed

Forces, including in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II,
4
Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan; and

Whereas, approximately 500,000 Hispanic service members fought in World
6
War II alone; and

Whereas, 61 Hispanic service members have received the Congressional
8
Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest award for valor; and

Whereas, 18.4 percent of the armed forces are Hispanic, including many active
10
duty service members, reservists, and members of the Wisconsin National Guard;

and

Whereas, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that

approximately 8,500 Hispanic veterans live in Wisconsin; and

Whereas, Wisconsin groups like American GI Forum Wisconsin and its

subsidiary, the Latino Veterans’ Legacy of Valor Foundation, seek to serve their
2
communities and honor the sacrifices of Hispanic veterans throughout the state;

Whereas, September 15 to October 15 is known as Hispanic Heritage Month,
5
a time to honor and recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans in
6
Wisconsin and across the United States; and

Whereas, today, the state of Wisconsin will reflect upon the often-overlooked
8
contributions and sacrifices of the state’s Hispanic and Latino veterans; now,
9
therefore, be it

assembly
concurring, That
the members of

the Wisconsin Legislature recognize and honor the bravery and sacrifice of the
12
thousands of Hispanic Wisconsinites who have served the cause of freedom as part
13
of the Armed Forces of the United States.
