Subject: Provides for a property tax exemption for veterans. Summary/Major Elements: Old law listed all wars/conflicts for which veterans were entitled to a property tax exemption if they served in those conflicts. New law merely states that service in any war/conflict qualifies for the property tax exemption if the person was awarded the armed forces expeditionary medal or other authorized service or campaign medal indicating service for the U.S. in any armed conflict in a foreign country. Report required Requires the department of revenue to report to the joint transportation interim committee by September 1, 2005 on the amount of money exempted and the breakdown of the exemptions between veterans and widows.
WORKING DRAFT ORIGINAL HOUSE BILL NO. 0084 ENROLLED ACT NO. 40, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES FIFTY-EIGHTH LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WYOMING 2005 GENERAL SESSION AN ACT relating to taxation and revenue; providing for the veterans property tax exemption as specified; requiring a report; and providing for an effective date. Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Wyoming: Section 1. W.S. 39 ‑ 13 ‑ 105(a)(vi)(intro) is amended to read: 39 ‑ 13 ‑ 105. Exemptions; veterans. (a) The following persons who are bona fide Wyoming residents for at least three (3) years at the time of claiming the exemption are entitled to receive the tax exemption provided by W.S. 39 ‑ 11 ‑ 105(a)(xxiv): (vi) An honorably discharged veteran who served in the military service of the United States, who is a bona fide Wyoming resident for at least three (3) years and who served in one (1) of the below listed military operations during the specified period and who was awarded the armed forces expeditionary medal , the Vietnam service medal or other authorized service or campaign medal : indicating service for the United States in any armed conflict in a foreign country. Section 2. W.S. 39 ‑ 13 ‑ 105(a)(vi)(A) through (R) is repealed. Section 3. The department of revenue shall submit a report to the joint transportation, highways and military affairs interim committee by September 1, 2005. The report shall include the cost to the state in the amount of money exempted under W.S. 39 ‑ 13 ‑ 105 and the breakdown of the exemptions between veterans and widows. Section 4. This act is effective January 1, 2005.
