Subject: Authorizing the Department of Transportation to specify by rule the color of lights that may be used on Department snow plows. Summary/Major Elements: Under current law, snow plows used by the Department of Transportation are required to be equipped with at least one red lamp visible from 500 feet in front of the vehicle and may be equipped with one or more blue, white or amber lights. This bill authorizes the Department of Transportation to adopt rules specifying the color of lights a Department snow plow may be equipped with, to allow more conspicuous colors for visibility during inclement weather.
WORKING DRAFT ORIGINAL SENATE FILE NO. 0076 ENROLLED ACT NO. 51, SENATE SIXTIETH LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WYOMING 2009 GENERAL SESSION AN ACT relating to motor vehicles; authorizing lights of a conspicuous color to be used on snow plows ; and providing for an effective date. Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Wyoming : Section 1. W.S. 31 ‑ 5 ‑ 928(d) is amended to read: 31 ‑ 5 ‑ 928. General lighting restrictions; authorized emergency vehicles. (d) Every authorized emergency vehicle, except police vehicles and as otherwise specified in this subsection, shall, in addition to any other equipment required by law, be equipped with at least one (1) red lamp visible from five hundred (500) feet in front of the vehicle. Except as otherwise provided in this subsection, every authorized emergency vehicle, may be equipped with one (1) or more blue, white or amber lights. Vehicles used by the department to clear snow from public highways may be equipped with one (1) or more lights of a conspicuous color as specified by rules adopted by the department . Privately - owned vehicles used by members of a fire department or emergency service organization in performing or traveling to perform assigned duties in those organizations shall display at least one (1) flashing white, red or amber light, but no blue lights, visible from five hundred (500) feet in front of the vehicle. Section 2. This act is effective immediately upon co m pletion of all acts necessary for a bill to become law as provided by Article 4, Section 8 of the Wyoming Constit u tion.
