Subject: Teacher shortage loan repayment program providing loans to qualified students enrolling in University of Wyoming programs leading to certification in specified teaching shortage areas. Summary/Major Elements: Loan repayment program available to University juniors and seniors enrolled in teacher education programs leading to certification in special education, math, science or foreign language instruction, or in a program for an additional teaching endorsement in reading or English as a second language; Loan amount limited to unmet financial need or the cost of attendance, and the student must have applied for federal assistance if in a program for certification in specified shortage areas; Recipient student may repay loan through teaching at least 50% of time in specified shortage area in Wyoming public schools for length of time as necessary to fully repay loan on a basis such that one year of full-time employment in specified teaching shortage area equals one academic year of full-time enrollment; Extends the program for an additional five years through June 30, 2016, as the program was set to terminate June 30, 2011. The five year extension allows the program sunset to coincide with the 2015-2016 fiscal biennium.
WORKING DRAFT ORIGINAL SENATE FILE NO. 0041 ENROLLED ACT NO. 22, SENATE SIXTIETH LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WYOMING 2010 BUDGET SESSION AN ACT relating to the Wyoming teacher shortage loan repayment program; extending the program for an additional five (5) years; and providing for an effective date. Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Wyoming : Section 1. W.S. 21 ‑ 7 ‑ 601(o) is amended to read: 21 ‑ 7 ‑ 601. Wyoming teacher shortage loan repayment program; eligibility criteria; procedures; program reporting. (o) This program created by this section shall expire effective June 30, 2011 2016 . Section 2 . This act is effective July 1, 2010.
