is amended to read:

Age for registration in first grade and kindergarten; preschool programs.

(a)

A pupil may register in the first grade in the public schools of this state in the year in which his sixth birthday falls on or before September 15
, provided that
a
pupil shall
not register in the first grade until the pupil has
completed a kindergarten program
or
the pupil
receives
permission from the school district to enroll directly in the first grade
after completing a readiness assessment administered by the district
.

Section 2.
This act is effective July 1, 2011.
