Changes to Restricted Driver's Licenses

This act changes rules about restricted class C and M driver's licenses for young drivers under 16 years old, expanding the driving area and changing what qualifies as 'extreme inconvenience'.

What This Bill Does

  • Expands the driving area from a fifty-mile radius to one hundred fifty miles around a person’s home for those with restricted licenses.
  • Changes what counts as 'extreme inconvenience' to qualify for these licenses. Now, it includes needing to drive to work in any business, not just their parent's.
  • Requires the Department of Transportation to make new rules about how to follow this act.

Who It Names or Affects

  • Young drivers between 14 and 16 years old who need restricted licenses.
  • Parents or guardians applying for these licenses on behalf of young drivers.

Terms To Know

Restricted license
A special driver's license given to people under 16 with certain limits on when and where they can drive.
Extreme inconvenience
A situation that makes it very hard for a young person to get to school or work without driving, which allows them to apply for a restricted driver's license.

Limits and Unknowns

  • The bill did not pass and was not considered for introduction in the House.
  • It is unclear how many people will be affected by these changes since it didn't become law.
