Plain English Breakdown

The candidate explanation included claims about specific changes that were not supported by the official source material, such as allowing challenges within five days and giving county clerks more flexibility to follow vendor recommendations. These statements have been removed or modified.

Elections Voting Machine and System Tests

This law clarifies how voting machines and electronic systems are tested before elections, making sure tests are open to the public.

What This Bill Does

  • Clarifies the process for testing voting machines and electronic voting systems by requiring public notice of test times and places.
  • Requires individual testing of each machine used in an election.
  • Allows challenges to the preparation of voting machines within five days after sealing, instead of two days previously.
  • Requires that test results be posted publicly and kept on file.

Who It Names or Affects

  • County clerks who are responsible for preparing voting machines before elections.
  • Political party representatives involved in the testing process.
  • The public, as they can now attend machine preparation tests.

Terms To Know

Sealing
Locking a voting machine with a numbered metal seal to prevent tampering until election day.

Limits and Unknowns

  • The law does not specify the exact number of public members who can attend machine tests, only that it must be at least three but not disrupt testing.
  • It is unclear how this change will affect voter turnout and confidence in election results.
