WHEREAS, February is recognized, acknowledged, and celebrated as Black
History Month across the United States; and
WHEREAS, Black History Month is an annual celebration of the achievements,
history, and legacy of African Americans and a time for recognizing their
pivotal role in the history of Nebraska and our country; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Carter G. Woodson first established Black History Month as a
week-long observation, and it was later expanded to a month-long celebration in
1976 by presidential decree; and
WHEREAS, African Americans have contributed significantly to the cultural,
social, economic, and political fabric of Nebraska even as they navigate
historic and systemic inequities, such as the practice of redlining, to help
drive progress and innovation; and
WHEREAS, new chapters in the history of African Americans continue to be
written, including the recent appointment of Judge Derek R. Vaughn as the first
African American judge of the Nebraska Supreme Court, the appointment of Jewel
Rodgers as the first African American Nebraska Poet Laureate, and the election
of Mayor John Ewing Jr. as the first African American Mayor of Omaha, Nebraska;
and
WHEREAS, Black History Month provides an opportunity for all Nebraskans to
reflect on the movement for racial equity, honor the resilience of Black
communities, and commit to creating a more abundant future.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MEMBERS OF THE ONE HUNDRED NINTH
LEGISLATURE OF NEBRASKA, SECOND SESSION:

1. That the Legislature recognizes February 2026 as Black History Month in
Nebraska.
2. That the Legislature encourages all people to take time this month to
celebrate the history, heritage, and culture of African Americans and their
contributions to the State of Nebraska and the United States of America.
